It's called EMDR and you may have heard about its success in treating major trauma from combat, accidents, etc., but it's not just for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
I define trauma as "anything that has happened to you that changed the way you feel about yourself or about your 'place' and safety in the world." So even if you feel that you've dealt with what happened, if it still causes emotional pain, there's a way to clear it away once and for all. EMDR is the most fully researched trauma treatment and is approved as a Class A method by the Veteran's Administration, so you can be assured that it is an evidence-based method of treatment, one that has proven its worth over the last 20 or so years.
EMDR helps remove the painful emotions from trauma memories-- no more getting hijacked by "triggers" as you go through your day. Those memories and experiences shaped how you think about yourself, and that can affect your ability to find and maintain healthy relationships. If an experience, even in childhood, has made you feel insecure or somehow defective, it will affect how you relate to others. You may find that others complain that your reactions to some things are "over the top" --this is probably due to your being unknowingly triggered to those early negative experiences.
EMDR often works in just 8-10 sessions, making it a time and finance-friendly treatment choice. Of course, the intensity and length of the trauma will affect the length of treatment. And for those who don't want to have to talk about their trauma, or re-tell their story yet again, EMDR can be effective with only a minimum of baseline information. It is often a very comfortable therapy for those who aren't comfortable talking about what happened to them, as it does not require a lot of emotional conversation to be effective.
Trauma is embedded in the 'emotional' side of the brain, and the bi-lateral stimulation of EMDR helps the 'logical' side of the brain affect the memory of the trauma. It essentially takes the emotions out of the memories. You will still remember what happened, but the memory will no longer be so painful...it will become 'just' a fact about your life.
Here's a video report by CBS News on EMDR and how it can help even multiple traumas. Note: in the video, you'll see lights, headphones and tappers being used. In actual practice, only one method is needed. I use tappers or lead eye movements with my hands.
In addition to EMDR, I also use solution-focused therapy, and --for those that like to think outside the box--Hypnotherapy. If you want to change habits such as smoking, over-eating, or get rid of a fear of flying, hypnotherapy can be an enjoyable way to support those changes.
